A tasteful ballad about the nature of change. Suitable for graduation ceremonies and going away parties.
Inspired by Elena Ferrante's (if that is indeed her real name) second of the Neapolitan Novels series.
lyrics
G G/F# Em C G
G C
Get on that plane girl and see where it takes
you
G
There’s nothing as scary as leaving the same
D
for something new
G C
Pull up the stakes, girl, as you take off
G G/F# Em C G
Go make some mistakes, girl, go get lost
C G
Say bye-bye to the old familiar
Am
You know those old clothes haven’t fit you for
a while
G C G
You’re sky high in the wild blue yonder
Am C G
Wearing a bursting-with-a-secret kind of smile
Am C
Your real friends won’t be mad at you
Am C
They’ll know it’s what you had to do
Am C G
Keep them with you everywhere you go
Am C
A man is just a man I guess
Am C
And girl you deserve nothing less
Am D
I hope your heart is strong enough to know
G
There’s nothing as scary as leaving the same
D
for something new
G C
Pull up the stakes girl as you take off
G G/F# Em C G
Go make some mistakes, girl, go get lost
Solo over “real friends” bridge:
Am C Am C Am G Am C Am C Am D
G C
Get on that plane girl and see where it takes
you
G
There’s nothing as scary as leaving the same
D
for something new
G C
Pull up the stakes, girl, as you take off
G G/F# Em C G
Go make some mistakes, girl, go get lost
C G
Say bye-bye to the old familiar
Am
I heard somebody say “change ain’t looking to
make friends”
G C G
But why, why is every time so similar?
Am C G
When something is beginning something ends
Am C
Your real friends won’t be mad at you
Am C
They’ll know it’s what you had to do
Am G
Keep them with you everywhere you go
Am C
A man is just a man I guess
Am C
And girl you deserve nothing less
Am D
I hope your heart is strong enough to know
G C
Get on that plane girl and see where it takes
you
G
There’s nothing as scary as leaving the same
D
for something new
G C
Pull up the stakes girl as you take off
G G/F# Em C G
Go make some mistakes, girl, go get lost
G G/F# Em C G
Go make some mistakes, girl, go get lost
C G
Say bye-bye to the old familiar.

As a lifelong fan of psyche, I was delighted to have found this, stunned that I'd missed them for three decades and devastated by the news of Dallas' passing. Makes many of the album's lyrics even more poignant. I hear echoes of the Chocolate Watch Band, Long Ryders and both the pop and country sides of the Byrds. Stunning, and a contender for my album of the year. Iain H
